The Pants Project

The Ship We Built

Gracefully Grayson

Zenobia July

Okay, I really feel the need to have two separate reviews for this one. First, the story itself. It was…okay, but there was some pretty big issues with it, mainly with regards to the hacking.

The Moon Within

3.5? Celi is dealing with a big crush, her impending period, and her best friend beginning to live his authentic life as genderfluid/xochiuah. I really, really love that there’s a book about a menstruation.

Spin with Me

Disclaimer: I received a free digital advanced copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Oh, my, gosh this book was adorable. I felt like both Ollie and Essie were easy to relate to, even if you don’t directly identify with them.

Cattywampus

Ana on the Edge

Lots of love for this story of a nonbinary figure skater. Twelve-year-old Ana is trying to figure out her (she decides that she/her is okay, at least for now) place in the world and in this very gendered sport, with the help of her family, her skating community, and some new friends.

The Other Boy

This book isn’t the perfect transgender narrative, yet it’s pretty close for a middle grade read. Albeit, I’m sure critics will say that Shane’s parents were on the extremely supportive side and that’s extremely rare, I loved looking through the lens of a preteen in transition because it made me think about how I’d support my students in this position.

Lily and Dunkin

The Deep & Dark Blue

Really charming trans graphic novel. This is only the second graphic novel I’ve ever read so I’m still getting used to processing story lines in that format and can’t really comment on any of that (especially because I read an ARC with no color, and I think color would’ve helped me differentiate between characters better), but I loved the trans storyline and lbr that’s what I was there for.

How to Understand Your Gender

This book is a great resource for lots of people in my opinion. Maybe the most useful for people starting to question their gender for the first time. But also as a tool for people trying to understand their gender journey.

A Quick & Easy Guide to They/Them Pronouns

It will take you fifteen minutes to read this little comic book. It will probably take you almost as long to read this review! The book is written and illustrated by Archie (non-binary, who uses they/them pronouns) and Tristan (cis male, who uses he/him).

Almost Perfect

Most of us, I suspect, have “met somebody” who would be just perfect, except… I look back on some of my “almost perfects,” and I cringe at what a douchebag I was. Logan has just broken up with Brenda, and he’s not optimistic about his prospects.

You probably meant this question for the author to respond to, but as someone looking forward to reading this book I want to put in my 2 cents. You probably meant this question for the author to respond to, but as someone looking forward to reading this book I want to put in my 2 cents.

Parrotfish

I loved this SO much more than Luna, which is kind of interesting considering I didn’t like Hard Love, the other Wittlinger book I’ve read, very much, whereas I loved the other books of Julie Anne Peters. I think the key difference that meant I enjoyed this one more was that in Luna, the trans character was a guy, Liam.

Rethinking Normal

A trans woman’s biography through her transition and life after that. It’s not an easy read, especially what happens to Katie at school makes me incredibly sad for her and angry at this dysfunctional institution. I can’t fathom how other teachers would just stand by and watch a student being tortured like that, it makes my blood boil.

I am J

Imagine being someone who was assigned female at birth, only to realize they aren’t actually female. To feel more male than anything must be a complicated thing, and this book by Cris Beam goes in depth of how frustrating and confusing this time can be. It is a tale of self-discovery and determination.

I Wish You All the Best

I initially rated this 4 stars but after reading a few reviews I changed my mind.. I enjoyed the overall story a lot but the side characters were all incredibly boring and have little to no personality (except for Mariam but even they didn’t really get much.

All Boys Aren’t Blue

I received an ALC of this book from the publisher through Libro FM in exchange of an honest review CW: grief, cancer, illness and death of loved ones, sexual assault, physical assault, use of slurs, trauma, sexual content. I quite frankly do not know how to start with this book or where to start because it was that powerful.

Gender

This was really good! It presented a ton of information in bite-sized nuggets and did a great job of not seeming condescending or angry. Instead, it was non-biased and incredibly informative, regardless of what your stances are on the emergence of new understandings of gender.

When the Moon Was Ours

Such a ridiculously beautiful magical realism YA about the process of claiming your gender and identity, your body, your name, and how to best support and love someone in that process. For so many reasons – the writing, the PoC (Latina and South Asian) representation, the trans representation, the on-page sex – I am so excited this book is in the world.

If I Was Your Girl

As others have mentioned, this book was written by a trans woman. If you’re curious about reading more literature by trans women while you’re waiting As others have mentioned, this book was written by a trans woman.

Stealing Thunder

Many thanks to Berkley Publishing Group for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review DNF @ page 50 Where to begin? Let me start by saying that I WON’T be discussing the trans and desi representations even though I have heard there are issues with them.
